Whiskers in the Window

Amaan had always said he wasn’t a “cat person.” So when his little sister brought home a stray kitten with patchy fur and oversized ears, he protested. “It’s your responsibility,” he warned.

But Whiskers had other plans.

He followed Amaan around the house like a shadow, pounced on his homework, curled up on his keyboard, and meowed until he was picked up. At first, Amaan was annoyed. But slowly, Whiskers worked his way into his heart. Late-night studies turned into quiet cuddles, and bad days ended with soft purring on his chest.

One night, Amaan found Whiskers limping. The vet said it was a genetic issue, and Whiskers might not live long. Amaan sat in silence, the thought of losing him already too much.

So, he made every day count. He built a small perch near his window so Whiskers could watch birds. He fed him by hand. He talked to him like a friend. And in those moments, he realized—he didn’t rescue Whiskers. Whiskers rescued him.

Two years later, Whiskers passed away in Amaan’s arms. The house felt emptier, quieter. But Amaan never removed the perch by the window. Instead, he placed a small photo there, with Whiskers looking out peacefully.

Sometimes, at sunset, Amaan still sits beside the window. Not alone—never alone. Because love like that doesn’t leave. It lingers, like soft purring in a quiet heart.
